Figured Walnut & Epoxy Serving Boards

Over the last few years the popularity of epoxy projects has continued to grow.  For us the attraction to those organic and swirly looking boards mixed with strikingly figured woods was undeniable.

We are constantly reviewing our product roadmap, working to keep our product offerings in sync with our customers wants and needs.  It became clear that adding epoxy would be a game changer for us.  While there is no shortage of other makers doing great epoxy work online, locally we didn’t see as much as we expected.  Still, the building of a new home and shop, the impending move (including the expected down time), and maintaining inventory of current products kept delaying this potentially transformative advancement.  That was until early December 2021.

Very First Project

We purchased some high end silicon molds, a lot of epoxy, the other supplies such as mold release and got started.  For our first project we chose to go small, just dipping our toes in the water so to speak….  The project was a  set of “river coasters”. They came out great and sold immediately.

The next project was a set of serving boards, made from a smallish slab of highly figured walnut… Let’s just say a lot of lessons were learned; so much of the wood was lost due to what I would call on the job training.

At the end of the day, they came out amazing.  We completed 2 boards measuring approximately 12” long  x 5”  wide. They did come out rather thin considering the slab we started with, but that gave them a delicate quality which was actually really nice.  In addition, we were able to make a pendant from a piece of left over scrap.

BEAUTIFUL BOARD

All and all we think these boards are really beautiful, even having to decline a few sales offers because we just couldn’t part with them!

We would love to hear what you think in the comments :)
